Growing up in Michigan, the car capital, it was kind of hard to "not" be involved with cars somehow. My father and his father both worked and retired from General Motors and my Mother's father and grandfather owned a gas station and worked on cars. I guess you can say that it's in my blood!
I went to a technical school for 2 years and received a certificate in Automotive Technology. From there I worked for a Honda Dealership for 7 years, first as a technician and then as a service manager. I left there to become an editor for Chilton Automotive books. My next job was working for 7 years at a community college in their automotive technology program. During that time I also finished my A.A.S in Automotive Technology. It was a great opportunity to always be up on the new technology and I discovered that I loved teaching.
I now have my own business, Ladies, Start Your Engines. My business is teaching women light maintenance on their vehicles. I love the feeling of empowerment that I am able to give the women who take my class. It also gives them the confidence to talk and understand their service advisor so that they don't feel cheated by the repairs.
I've also had the opportunity to be on the Advisory Panel of AskPatty.com for the last year. This has been a great opportunity to answer repair questions that women have and help them understand what's going on with their vehicle. Ask Patty and I understand all to well the need to empower women about their automobiles and help them feel confident when dealing with the automotive industry. I love the work I do and anyone who takes my class can see that. I've spent 20 years learning all this stuff .I may as well share it!
